Allison papers include "Memories of the Early Days: An Account of the Early Experiences of Brigadier General James N. Allison, USA," by Philip W. Allison, Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor Publishers, 1964. This work is a transcription of a tape recording made by Colonel Allison in 1962 reminiscing about his father's early career. It consists mostly of random anecdotes and vignettes of James Allison's service in the Civil War, 1863-1865; as a West Point cadet, 1867-1871; and as an Indian fighter, 1871-1893. The author errs in identifying the Civil War regiment in which his father served as the 17th rather than the 39th Kentucky.
